Molonglo

Molonglo is a young community where the typical resident is just 31, far younger than the national figure of 38. Children under 15 make up 23.4% of the population, which is well above the territory average and helps explain why there are more people per home here than in most other areas.

The area is very diverse, with 40.9% of people born overseas, a figure far above the national average. Indian and Chinese ancestries are particularly common, and the number of overseas-born residents has risen by 9.3 percentage points since 2016.

Residents are generally in good health; the 19.1% of people with a long-term health condition is well below the national average of 27.7%. Similarly, only 2% of people need help with daily activities, which is among the lowest for its level.

Caregiving is a major part of local life, with 34.4% of people providing unpaid childcare, well above the national average. However, only 15.1% of residents volunteer, which is well below the territory figure.

The First Nations community is small, but those residing here have a Year 12 completion rate of 69%, which is far above the national average of 37%. Personal incomes for First Nations people are also among the highest for similar areas.

Families with children are the most common household type at 65.3%. This is consistent with the high number of children in the area and the fact that typical homes have 2.7 people, slightly more than the national average.

Most people are paying off a mortgage, with 64.8% of homes owned this way, while only 7.7% are owned outright. Rent is much higher than the national average at $472 a week, and separate houses are far less common here than across Australia.

Cars are the primary way to get around, and only 2% of homes have no vehicle. While 4.6% of people use public transport to commute, the walk to the nearest stop can take up to 68 minutes, which is among the highest for its level.

The area is highly transitional, with 73.4% of residents having moved house in the last five years, far above the national average of 40.7%. Recent arrivals from overseas also make up a significant 17.5% of the population.

Employment is very strong, with 82.4% of adults working or looking for work, far above the national figure of 61.1%. Many residents work in public administration and safety, and the unemployment rate of 3.2% is among the lowest for its level.

Growth is continuing rapidly, with the population estimated to have risen by 58.4% since 2021, far above the territory's average growth of 7.1%.

The area sees an average annual rainfall of 805mm, which is a little below the territory average. Minimum temperatures are among the lowest for its level, averaging 6.9 degrees.

The area is somewhat walkable, though it falls well below the territory average for the number of homes within a 15-minute walk of a school or groceries. Most residents are within a short walk of a park, but the terrain is slightly steeper than the territory average.
