The population has grown by 12% since 2011 to nearly 100,000 people. The typical resident is 36, which is a little younger than the national figure, and there is a lower proportion of people in de facto relationships compared to most areas.

A huge 50.4% of people were born overseas, a figure far above both the state and national averages. English, Chinese, and Indian are among the most common ancestries reported.

Language diversity is very high, with 41.9% of people using another language at home—far above the national figure of 22.3%. This trend has risen by 11 points since 2011, and 5.5% of residents speak little or no English.

Religious affiliation is more common here than in most similar areas, as the 33.8% who report no religion is well below the national figure of 38.9%. Christianity is the most common faith at 37.7%.

The community is very well qualified; 34.1% of adults have a bachelor degree or higher, which is well above the national average. Year 12 completion is also far above the national figure at 69.7%.

Typical weekly household incomes are around $1,800, which is higher than most areas. The number of households earning $3,000 or more a week rose by 11 points since 2011 to reach 22.7%.

Residents here are generally healthier than those in other areas. Those with a long-term health condition (22.4%) and those with a mental health condition (6.3%) are both well below the national figures.

Volunteering is more common here than in most areas, with 16.2% of people participating. This is higher than the national figure of 14.1%.

First Nations people make up 1.3% of the population. While Year 12 completion is a little above the national average, the unemployment rate for this group is among the highest at this level at 20.0%.

Homes tend to be larger, with 2.7 people per household. This is much higher than most areas and is consistent with the fact that 63.8% of households are couples with children.

Most residents live in separate houses, and 86.2% of homes have three or more bedrooms, which is far above the national figure. Renting is more common here than in most areas, at 31.7%.

Public transport use is much higher than in most areas, supported by a very high number of stops and routes. Despite this, 63.6% of people still drive themselves to work.

The area is quite mobile, with 42.6% of people having moved in the last five years. Recent overseas arrivals make up 17.5% of the population, which is well above the state average.

More adults are working or looking for work (64.1%) compared to the national figure. However, full-time employment has fallen by 4.6 points since 2011 to 56.9%.

The population has continued to grow, increasing by 10.0% since the 2021 census, which is much higher than most similar areas.

The area is warmer than the state average, with an average maximum temperature of 25.3 degrees. Annual rainfall is 669mm, which is lower than most areas.

Canning is very walkable, with a score of 6.7. Almost all homes are within a 10-minute walk of public transport and a 15-minute walk of parks, groceries and health services.
