Wambo

The community has a significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 8%, which has risen since 2011. Families are common here, with children under 15 making up 22% of the population, well above the Queensland figure.

Wambo is very traditional in its roots, with 84.9% of people born in Australia. Only 7.4% were born overseas, which is far below the national figure.

English is the dominant language, spoken by 88.6% of residents. This is consistent with the low number of overseas arrivals, leaving only 4.1% of people using another language at home.

About 60.7% of residents identify as Christian. Those with no religion make up 29.6%, a figure that has risen sharply by 17 percentage points since 2011.

Educational qualifications are much lower than most areas, with only 11.1% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher. Year 12 completion is also far below the national figure at 42.4%.

Typical weekly household income is $1,410, which is a little below the national figure. Low-income households are common, with 17.9% earning under $650 a week.

Health challenges are more common here than in most areas, with 32.1% of people reporting a long-term health condition. Those needing help with daily activities stand at 6.7%.

Local residents are very active in their community, with 18.8% volunteering, which is well above the national figure. Unpaid care for children is also common at 27.5%.

The First Nations community is large and notably young, with a typical age of just 19. However, this group faces challenges, with an unemployment rate of 14.4%.

Homes here are typically occupied by couples with children (54.6%). One-parent families are also more common than in most areas at 16.8%.

The landscape is dominated by separate houses (92.4%), most of which have three or more bedrooms. Rent is much lower than the national figure, typically costing $250 a week.

The area is almost entirely car-dependent, as there are no public transport routes or stops. Only 0.5% of people use public transport to get to work.

The population is relatively stable, with 37.8% of people moving in the last five years. Recent overseas arrivals have fallen sharply since 2011.

Full-time work is common here, with 63.2% of the population employed full-time, well above the national average. Many people work in agriculture, forestry, and fishing.

Wambo has a large number of businesses (2,374), yet it ranks lower than most areas for overall advantage and access to resources.

The area is quite warm and dry, with an average maximum temperature of 27.9 degrees and annual rainfall of 536mm.

Walking is difficult in Wambo, where only 33.2% of homes have a 15-minute-city walkshed. Most residents rely on cars to reach groceries, parks and health services.
