Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 25% of the population, which is far above the national figure of 3.2% and has risen since 2011. The community is noticeably older than the Australian average, with 21% of residents aged 65 and over.

Most residents were born in Australia, and the area has a much lower proportion of overseas-born people (8%) compared to the rest of the state. English and Irish are the most common ancestries after Australian.

English is the primary language for 75.9% of the community, and the proportion of people using another language at home is far below the national figure. Very few residents speak little or no English.

Half of the population identifies as Christian, while 25.7% of residents have no religion. This figure is far below the national average, although it has risen by 14 points since 2011.

Education levels are much lower than most areas, with only 9.1% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher. This is reflected in the proportion of people who completed Year 12, which is far below the national figure of 58.8%.

Typical weekly household income is $1,122, which is well below the national figure of $1,746. Only 9.8% of households earn $3,000 or more a week, a rate far below the rest of the state.

A slightly higher proportion of people need help with daily activities (6.8%) compared to the national average. Long-term health conditions are also more common here, particularly arthritis and mental health issues.

Unpaid work is less common here than in most areas, with much lower rates of people caring for children or doing housework. Volunteer rates have also fallen significantly since 2011.

One-parent families are very common, making up 22.7% of households, which is well above the national figure. Additionally, 33% of people live alone, a rate much higher than most areas.

Detached houses are the norm for 91.8% of residents, and 39.1% of homes are owned outright. Typical weekly rent is far below the national average at $230.

Most people commute by car, and 12% of workers work from home. While there are many public transport routes, the average walk to the nearest stop is among the highest in the country.

Movement into the area is low, with fewer people moving in over the last five years than in most other regions. However, recent arrivals from overseas have risen sharply since 2011 to reach 18.3%.

Working or looking for work is much less common here than in the rest of the state, and the unemployment rate is slightly above the national average. Many residents work in health, social assistance, or agriculture.

The area ranks low for overall advantage, with a score of 900. This puts it below about 88% of all other areas in terms of access to money, resources, and job skills.

The area is only somewhat walkable, as far fewer homes are within a 15-minute walk of groceries, health services, or schools compared to the state average.
