The area is far older than most of Australia, with more than 22% of people aged 65 and over. An increasing number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people live here, rising to 6.9% since 2011, while children under 15 also make up a higher share of the population at 19.4%.

The community is overwhelmingly Australian-born, with 89.8% born here and only 4.5% born overseas. This is far below the national figure, and ancestry is primarily Australian, English, or Irish.

English is the dominant language, spoken by 95.1% of people at home. Very few residents use another language, and there are effectively no residents who speak little or no English.

Christianity is the most common faith at 60.2%. However, the proportion of people reporting no religion has risen sharply since 2011 to reach 34.1%.

Education levels are lower than the state average, with only 38.1% of people completing Year 12. While the number of adults with a bachelor degree has risen to 13.8% since 2011, this remains far below the national figure.

Typical incomes are well below the national average, with a typical household earning $1,346 a week. While the number of households earning $3,000 or more a week rose to 13.4% since 2011, overall pay remains low.

Long-term health conditions are more common here than in most areas, affecting 31.3% of people. Arthritis and asthma are the most frequent conditions, though the number of people needing help with daily activities has actually fallen since 2011.

This is a highly active community where 24.4% of people volunteer, far above the national figure. There are also high rates of unpaid care, with 31.4% of people doing more than 15 hours of housework a week.

Families with children are common, making up 52.2% of households. About a quarter of the population lives alone, and the typical home holds 2.4 people.

Housing is dominated by separate houses, which make up 93.6% of all homes. A striking 49.3% of these homes are owned outright, and renting is much less common here than elsewhere in the state.

The area is highly reliant on cars, with 50.4% of workers driving and no one commuting by public transport. However, 23.6% of people work from home, which is higher than in most areas.

About 34.7% of residents have moved in the last five years, a figure that has risen since 2011. In contrast, there were no recent arrivals from overseas reported in the latest census.

Agriculture, forestry, and fishing are the main industries, employing 22.9% of the workforce. Unemployment is low at 3.5%, which is better than the state and national figures.

Residents have a high level of access to money and resources compared to similar areas, but the community ranks lower for overall advantage and job skills.

The area is heavily car-dependent with a very low walkability score of 2.0. Very few homes are within a 15-minute walk of groceries, schools, or health services, partly due to the steep terrain.
