Montello

Montello is a relatively young community where the typical resident is 40, and children under 15 make up 19.7% of the population. De facto relationships are also much more common here than in most similar areas.

Most residents were born in Australia, and those with ancestral roots primarily trace them to England and Australia. The proportion of people born overseas is 10.1%, which is far below the national figure.

English is the dominant language here, used by 91.1% of the community. Only 3.1% of people use another language at home, a figure far below the national average.

The community is marked by a high level of secularism, as 55.6% of people report no religion. This is far above the national figure of 38.9%.

Educational attainment is much lower than the state and national figures, with only 11.7% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher and 36.8% completing Year 12.

Typical incomes are much lower than the national average, with a typical household earning $1,014 a week. Only 8.8% of households earn $3,000 or more weekly, which is far below the national figure.

Health challenges are more common here than in most areas, with 36.6% of people living with a long-term health condition and 13.5% reporting a mental health condition.

Providing unpaid care is much more common here than in most areas, with 15.9% of people helping others. This includes a higher than average 27.4% of people caring for children.

First Nations people make up a significant part of the community, with a typical age of 24. However, unemployment is a little higher than the national rate at 12.5%.

One-parent families are very common, making up 22.6% of households. There is also a high number of people living alone, at 34.5%, which is well above the national figure.

Renting is much more common here than in most areas, with 37% of households renting. While most people live in separate houses, outright home ownership is much lower than the state average.

The area is very car-dependent, with 72.1% of workers driving to work. Very few people work from home, at just 3.1%, which is far below the national figure.

The community has seen some movement, with 37.2% of people moving in the last five years. Recent arrivals from overseas make up 15.2% of the population.

While full-time employment is higher than the state average, the overall number of adults working or looking for work is well below the national figure.

The area is very walkable, with 100% of homes within a 15-minute walk of a park or school. However, access to groceries and health services is much lower than in the rest of Tasmania.
