The community is older than the state and national average, with a typical resident aged 43. First Nations people make up 7% of the population, which is well above the national figure of 3.2%.

Most residents were born in Australia, and those with overseas roots are far less common here than across Western Australia. English, Scottish, and Irish ancestries are the most frequent.

English is the primary language for the vast majority, and those using another language at home are far fewer than in the rest of the state. Only 0.6% of people speak little or no English.

A little more than 44% of residents have no religion, a figure that is well above the national average. Christianity is also common, accounting for 41.7% of the population.

Educational attainment is lower than in most other areas, with only 9.7% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher. Far fewer people have completed Year 12 compared to the state average.

Typical household incomes are well below the national figure, and those earning $3,000 or more a week are far less common than in most other areas.

Residents are more likely to have a long-term health condition than the state average, and a slightly higher number of people need help with daily activities.

Volunteering is exceptionally high here, with 32.7% of people pitching in, far above the national figure of 14.1%. There are also slightly more former Defence Force members than usual.

The First Nations community is larger than in 82% of similar areas. While unemployment among this group is far below the national rate, typical personal incomes are a little below the national figure.

Many people live alone here—37.1% of households—which is far above the state average. Single-parent families are also much more common than in most other areas.

Most homes are separate houses, and while rent and mortgage payments are much lower than the national average, a higher proportion of households are renting.

The area is very remote, with a drive time to the city among the highest at this level. Almost no one uses public transport to get to work, and very few work from home.

About 38% of the population moved here in the last five years, which is about the same as the state average. Recent arrivals from overseas are well below the national figure.

Full-time employment is a little above the national average, with many people working in wholesale trade, agriculture, or health care.

While the area is mostly car-dependent, residents have good access to essentials, with far more people within a 15-minute walk of health services and groceries than in the rest of the state.
