Putty

Putty is an older community where the typical resident is 48, far older than the national figure of 38. Seniors make up 27.8% of the population, which is much higher than most areas, while children under 15 are well below the state average at 11.1%.

About 22.2% of residents were born overseas, which is much higher than most similar areas, though this remains well below the New South Wales average. The most common ancestries are English, Australian, and Irish.

English is the main language for 84.1% of people, and unlike many other areas, no one here speaks little or no English. A small number of residents use Arabic at home.

Education levels are far below the national figure, with only 13.9% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher. A typical resident has completed a Certificate III or IV, and many did not finish Year 12.

Incomes are much lower than most areas; the typical household earns $1,093 a week, which is well below the national figure of $1,746. No households earn $3,000 or more per week.

Health challenges are more common here, with 32.5% of people having a long-term health condition. Mental health conditions are reported at 16.7%, which is well above the national figure of 8.8%.

Volunteering is common, with 23.1% of people helping out, far above the state average. There is also a higher rate of people doing 15 or more hours of unpaid housework and more former Defence Force members than in most areas.

The First Nations community is small, with three people. The typical First Nations resident is far older than the state average at 51 and earns more than the national figure for this group.

Living alone is very common here, with 45.8% of people in single-person households, far above the state average. One-parent families are also well above the national figure at 18.4%.

Housing is overwhelmingly dominated by separate houses, with 64.6% of residents owning their homes outright. While typical rents are well above the national figure, most people do not rent.

The area is entirely car-dependent, with no public transport stops or routes available. Every home has at least one motor vehicle, and the drive to the city can take over three and a half hours.

About 31.4% of the population moved here in the last five years, though this is well below the state average. There have been no recent arrivals from overseas.

Fewer adults are working or looking for work compared to most areas, at 46.3%. Most of those employed work in construction, health care, or agriculture.

Putty is completely car-dependent, with no schools, shops, or health services within a 15-minute walk. The terrain is also much steeper than the state average.
