The area has a much higher proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people than most similar places, at 5.8%. While the population is growing and becoming slightly older, it remains far younger than both South Australia and the national average.

Unpaid care for children is much more common here than in most areas, at 29.9%. Conversely, volunteering is much lower than the state average, with only 8.4% of people volunteering.

There are 1,056 First Nations people in the area, who are noticeably younger than the state average with a typical age of 18. Unemployment for this group is much higher than most areas at 19.1%.

One-parent families are very common, making up 31.4% of households, which is far above the national figure of 14.1%. This helps explain why homes here are larger, with 2.7 people per home.

Renters are very common, with 44.1% of households renting, far above the national figure. Most homes are separate houses with three or more bedrooms, and the typical weekly rent of $270 is much lower than the national average.

Most people drive to work, and 10% of homes have no motor vehicle, which is higher than in most areas. While there are many public transport stops nearby, the transit time to the city is among the highest at 85 minutes.

The area is quite mobile, with 41.4% of people moving in the last five years. This is higher than most similar areas, though the number of recent overseas arrivals has fallen since 2011.

Unemployment is a significant issue at 11.9%, which is well above the national figure of 5.1%. Many residents work as labourers, community workers, or in retail and health care.

The area is ranked as having very low overall advantage compared to other regions. Despite this, it has seen much higher population growth since 2021 than the state average.

The local climate is slightly cooler than the state average, with an average maximum temperature of 23.3 degrees. Rainfall is far above the South Australian average at 428mm.
