Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 12.9% of the population, which is well above the national figure of 3.2%. The community is getting older, with the proportion of people aged 65 and over rising to 19.7%, a figure higher than most similar areas.

Most residents were born in Australia, and only 13.0% were born overseas, which is far below the national average of 27.7%. English and Australian are the most common ancestries, accounting for 36.2% and 36.0% respectively.

English is the main language here, with only 8.4% of people using another language at home, far below the national figure of 22.3%. This aligns with the lower number of overseas-born residents.

About half of the community identifies as Christian, while 37.7% report no religion. This lack of religious affiliation has grown significantly, rising 18 points since 2011.

Education levels are much lower than in most areas, with only 10.6% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher compared to the national figure of 26.3%. Year 12 completion is also far below the national average at 43.6%.

Typical weekly household income is $1,294, which is well below the national figure of $1,746. Only 11.4% of households earn $3,000 or more per week, a rate much lower than most similar areas.

Health challenges are common here, as 35.9% of people have a long-term health condition. This is well above the national average, and 9.4% of residents need help with daily activities, which is among the highest at this level.

A high proportion of residents have served in the Defence Force, at 7.2%, which is well above the national figure of 2.8%. However, volunteering is lower than most areas at 10.9%.

The First Nations community is large, with a typical age of 20, which is noticeably younger than the national figure of 24. Unemployment is very high among First Nations people at 21.1%, and personal income is much lower than most areas.

One-parent families make up 24.8% of households, which is far above the national average of 14.1%. There is also a higher than usual number of people living alone, at 28.8%.

Separate houses are common, making up 83.5% of homes, and 82.2% of dwellings have three or more bedrooms. Renting is more common here than in the rest of the country, with 36.1% of households renting at a typical weekly cost of $273.

Most people rely on cars for work, and 9.9% of homes have no motor vehicle, which is a bit higher than the national figure. Very few people work from home at 4.3%, which is far below the national average.

The population is relatively stable, with 34.9% of people moving in the last five years, which is well below the national figure of 40.7%. Recent overseas arrivals have fallen by 11 points since 2011.

About 55.3% of adults are working or looking for work, which is much lower than most similar areas. The unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is a little above the national average of 5.1%.

The area ranks very low for overall advantage, scoring 1 out of 10. This is consistent with the low levels of education and typical incomes seen across the suburb.
