Volunteering is very common here, with 28.1% of people helping out, far above the national figure of 14.1%. This high level of community support is seen alongside a higher-than-average rate of people providing unpaid care.

First Nations people make up 3.9% of the population. This group faces significant challenges, with a 20.0% unemployment rate and a typical household income of $937, both of which are well below the national figures.

Homes are smaller on average with 2.1 people per dwelling, partly because 35.0% of people live alone. This is much higher than in most other areas, and one-parent families are much less common here.

Agriculture, forestry, and fishing are the main industries, employing 23.7% of the workforce. Fewer adults are working or looking for work compared to the rest of the state, with a rate of 43.5%.

The region ranks lower than most areas for overall advantage, with a score of 3 out of 10. This is linked to lower levels of job skills and limited access to money and resources.

The climate is drier than the state average, with annual rainfall of 410mm. Average maximum temperatures are also lower than the state figure, sitting at 22.4 degrees.
