Ararat Moyne
Moyne and Ararat are two regional Victorian areas with very different profiles. Moyne is more advantaged, with far higher access to money and resources and a larger share of adults working or looking for work (62.1% compared to 51.1% in Ararat). Crime rates are also much lower in Moyne; for example, the theft rate is 587 per 100,000 people, while it is 2,003 in Ararat. In contrast, Ararat is more walkable, with far more homes within a 15-minute walk of health services (50.3% versus 22.9% in Moyne) and more public transport stops and departures.
These two areas share many basic characteristics, including very similar proportions of First Nations people, nearly identical typical weekly rents around $245 to $250, and similar rates of home ownership. This shared baseline exists despite a stark contrast in their First Nations populations, where the typical age is far younger in Moyne (21 years) than in Ararat (30 years). While the gap in employment has remained little changed since 2011, Moyne continues to have a far higher rate of Year 12 completion among First Nations residents.
