Ararat Golden Plains
Golden Plains and Ararat are two Victorian regional areas with very different profiles. Golden Plains is more affluent, with 21.3% of households earning $3,000 or more a week and far more people working or looking for work (65.4%). This is consistent with the area having larger homes—89.0% have three or more bedrooms—and typical monthly mortgage payments that are $650 higher than in Ararat. In contrast, Ararat has a much higher proportion of people living alone (32.4%) and a far greater number of recent arrivals from overseas at 18.8%.
These differences have become more pronounced over time, with the gap in high incomes widening since 2011. Despite these divergent trends, the two areas share a similar proportion of First Nations residents and nearly identical unemployment rates. They also experience almost the same temperatures and have similar shares of people who have moved in the last five years. While Ararat has far more public transport stops and departures, both areas see very few people actually commuting by public transport.
