Hobart South East
Hobart and South East are two different Tasmanian landscapes, separated by about 81 km. Hobart is a more urban centre where 29.2% of adults have a bachelor degree or higher, compared to 17.2% in South East. It is also a younger and more international area; the typical resident is 39, while in South East they are far older at 48. This difference in age is matched by living patterns, with Hobart being more walkable (somewhat walkable) and having more renters (28.8%) than South East, where 46.1% of homes are owned outright and most of the area is car-dependent.
Both areas are remarkably similar when it comes to the household, with about 28% of people living alone and 2.3 to 2.4 people per home. However, other gaps have widened since 2011. The age difference has grown from five to nine years, and the gap in university qualifications has also increased. Hobart continues to attract more people from overseas, while South East remains more likely to be home to First Nations people, who make up 7.7% of the population compared to 4.5% in Hobart.
