Community Participation in South East
How people contribute — volunteering, unpaid care and domestic work, and defence service.
Nearly one in five people in South East volunteer their time, a figure well above the national average. This high level of community involvement is mirrored in the strong proportion of residents who have served in the Defence Force. While unpaid care roles have declined slightly over the last decade, community contribution remains a key feature of the area.

About 19.0% of people volunteer here, which is much higher than most areas and well above the Australian figure of 14.1%. This is a slight drop from 2011, when 21.5% of the population volunteered.
Unpaid care & work
Caring for others and unpaid domestic work.
Unpaid work is common, with 26.3% of people doing 15 or more hours of housework weekly, a figure well above the national average. While 13.5% provide unpaid care—which is much higher than most areas—the proportion of people caring for children unpaid is well below the national figure at 23.2%.
