Hume Mitchell
Mitchell and Hume are two Victorian areas with very different profiles. Hume is a more urban, multicultural hub where 39.9% of people were born overseas and 48.8% use a language other than English at home. In contrast, Mitchell is more rural and less diverse, with only 14.7% born overseas. A major difference is seen in religious views; 42.6% of Mitchell residents report having no religion, which is far higher than the 19.3% in Hume. Living in Hume also means easier access to basics, as 65.9% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of groceries, compared to just 25.6% in Mitchell.
Since 2011, the gaps between these two areas have generally grown. The difference in the share of people born overseas and those using other languages at home has widened, as has the gap in people with no religion. Despite these diverging trends, they remain very similar in some ways. Both areas have almost identical typical weekly household incomes, around $1,710, and both sit near the national average for overall advantage. While Hume is somewhat walkable and Mitchell is mostly car-dependent, both areas have seen a similar level of population movement, with about 41% of residents arriving in the last five years.
