Hume Melbourne
Hume and Melbourne are two very different parts of Greater Melbourne. Hume is a family-oriented area where 22.4% of people are children and 27.9% of adults provide unpaid childcare. This is reflected in the housing, where 89.3% of homes have three or more bedrooms and 87.8% are separate houses. In contrast, Melbourne is dominated by small-scale living; 85.8% of homes are flats or apartments and 43.1% of people live alone. Melbourne also has a much more highly qualified workforce, with 54.2% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher, compared to 20.2% in Hume.
Daily life in both areas shares some common ground, with very similar typical weekly incomes of around $1,700 and nearly identical unemployment rates of about 7.6%. However, the gaps between them are often growing. Since 2011, the difference in the number of people living alone and those working from home has widened, and the gap in the share of people with no religion has increased to 30 points.
