Horsham and Hindmarsh are two Victorian areas with very different social profiles. Hindmarsh has a far older population, with a typical resident aged 50 compared to 41 in Horsham. This age gap has widened since 2011. Horsham is a more connected hub, with far higher rates of public transport stops and departures, and it has much larger schools. Conversely, Hindmarsh has a much higher share of homes owned outright (52.2% compared to 39.4%) and more homes within a 15-minute walk of health services (63.4% versus 31.4%).
Both areas are remarkably similar in their basic makeup, with nearly the same share of First Nations people, similar unemployment rates, and almost identical numbers of people per home. They also both sit close to the national figure for overall advantage. While Hindmarsh is more sparsely populated, it has more homes within a 15-minute walk of groceries and schools than Horsham does.
