Buloke Hindmarsh
Buloke and Hindmarsh are two rural Victorian areas with similar populations, but they differ in their social and educational landscapes. Hindmarsh has larger schools, with an average size of 182 compared to just 87 in Buloke, and far more school enrolments. First Nations residents are far older in Hindmarsh, and the area has a higher rate of Year 12 completion for First Nations people. In contrast, Buloke has a far higher First Nations unemployment rate and a larger share of people who speak a First Nations language. Buloke also sees more volunteering and a higher share of homes owned outright.
Since 2011, these two areas have tracked differently in some key areas. The gap in people born overseas and those using another language at home has widened, with Hindmarsh now well higher in both. Meanwhile, the lead in recent overseas arrivals has flipped, and is now well higher in Buloke. Despite these shifts, the two areas remain very alike in their typical weekly incomes and age structures, with both having about 28% of their population aged 65 and over.
