Aston Monash
Monash and Aston are two very different Victorian areas. Aston is a very walkable hub where 33% of people were born overseas and 28.7% use another language at home. In contrast, Monash is mostly car-dependent, with only 13% born overseas and 4.8% using another language at home. Aston has a more highly qualified workforce, with a far higher share of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher (28.0% compared to 16.1% in Monash) and more people earning $3,000 or more a week (23.8% versus 13.0%). Monash is older, with a typical resident aged 46 and a well higher share of people aged 65 and over (25.1% against 17.9% in Aston).
These gaps in education and income have widened over time. Both areas share a similar proportion of children under 15 and a nearly identical share of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. While they both have similar unemployment rates, Aston is much better connected, with far more public transport departures and a shorter drive to the city. Monash has a much higher number of schools per 1,000 children, though these schools are typically smaller than those in Aston.
