These two areas are far apart and show very different social profiles. 500 or more has a much larger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 67.8%, and a far higher share of people using another language at home (62.5%). In contrast, 5,000 to 9,999 has a far higher share of people born overseas (18.6%) and a more qualified workforce, with 44.9% having completed Year 12 compared to 31.7% in 500 or more. Pay is also much lower in 500 or more, where the typical weekly personal income is $362, while in 5,000 to 9,999 it is $1,025.
Both areas are effectively alike in the share of people who need help with daily activities. However, many other gaps have widened since 2011. The difference in typical weekly income has grown, and the gap in the number of people caring for children unpaid has increased. While 5,000 to 9,999 is more likely to have a university degree, both areas sit well below the national figure for this measure.
