Burdekin Thuringowa
Burdekin and Thuringowa are two distinct Queensland areas with very different layouts and workforces. Burdekin is a sprawling region where mining and farming are the top industries, and it has a much higher share of recent overseas arrivals at 21.7%. In contrast, Thuringowa is more concentrated, with more people working in health and public administration, and a far higher share of residents who served in the Defence Force (9.5%). Thuringowa also has more typical residents who finished Year 12 (49.5%) and significantly larger schools, compared to Burdekin's smaller school sizes.
Both areas are similar in their home sizes, with about 2.5 or 2.6 people per home. They also share a similar proportion of residents aged 65 and over, around 15%. While they are alike in these counts, other gaps have shifted since 2011. The lead has flipped for people living alone and those earning $2,000 or more a week, both of which are now more common in Burdekin. Meanwhile, the gap in Year 12 completion has narrowed, though it remains far higher in Thuringowa.
