West Arnhem Gulf
Gulf and West Arnhem are two remote areas in the Northern Territory. West Arnhem has a much higher proportion of First Nations people (90.9%) and those who speak a First Nations language (94.3%) compared to Gulf, where these figures are 77.6% and 79.0%. West Arnhem also sees more people using another language at home (88.5% compared to 62.7% in Gulf) and more people who speak little or no English (15.7% compared to 5.6%). Housing differs significantly, as West Arnhem has a far higher share of separate houses (90.7%) than Gulf (66.9%).
The gap in the number of people who speak little or no English has widened since 2016. Both areas share very similar typical weekly household incomes, sitting around $1,300, and both have about 5% of adults with a bachelor degree or higher. They also face similar challenges with transport, as both have no public transport stops or departures per 1,000 people. This lack of transport is consistent with the high number of homes without a motor vehicle in both places, though this is more common in West Arnhem (62.1%) than in Gulf (44.6%).
