Orange Parkes
Orange and Parkes are two regional New South Wales centres with distinct profiles. Orange is a larger hub where more people have finished Year 12 (48.5% compared to 36.9% in Parkes) and have university degrees. It has more public transport options, with 87.8% of homes within a 15-minute walk of a stop, and more people earning $2,000 or more a week. In contrast, Parkes is a more sparsely populated area with a higher First Nations population (13.1% compared to 7.7% in Orange) and a typical resident who is older by four years.
Both areas are very similar in their daily home lives, with almost identical numbers of people per home and the same share of residents working from home. Since 2011, several gaps have widened between them; Orange has seen a rise in the share of people born overseas and adults with bachelor degrees compared to Parkes. While both are below the national figure for Year 12 completion, Orange sits closer to the Australian average than Parkes does.
