Bathurst Regional Orange
Bathurst Regional and Orange are two nearby New South Wales areas with very similar populations of around 43,500. They differ most in their layout and crime rates. Orange is more compact, with far more street intersections and a higher share of homes within a short walk of public transport, parks, and schools. Crime is also more frequent in Orange, where the rates of burglary, motor vehicle theft and theft are all far higher. In contrast, Bathurst Regional has more schools per 1,000 children and a well higher rate of drug offences.
Since 2011, the two areas have drifted slightly apart in some key areas. The gap in home ownership has widened, with Bathurst Regional now well higher than Orange. Orange has also seen its share of children under 15 and adults with a bachelor degree or higher rise more quickly than in Bathurst Regional. Despite these changes, they remain very alike in many ways. Both have similar typical weekly household incomes, a similar share of people born overseas, and roughly the same percentage of residents who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
