Cobar Lachlan
Lachlan and Cobar are two regional New South Wales areas with very different economic profiles. Cobar has much higher household incomes, with 21.2% of homes earning $3,000 or more a week compared to just 10.3% in Lachlan. This wealth gap extends to First Nations households, who earn far more in Cobar ($2,045) than in Lachlan ($1,163). In contrast, Lachlan has a far higher share of recent overseas arrivals at 37.2% and is generally more walkable, with 46.3% of homes within a 15-minute walk of groceries compared to 35.1% in Cobar.
Since 2011, the income gap between the two has widened, while the difference in resident ages has narrowed. Despite these trends, they share many similarities, such as having almost identical shares of children under 15 (about 21%) and very similar numbers of people per home. Both areas have a much higher proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents than the national figure, and both are equally unlikely to use public transport for commuting.
