Bland Lachlan
Lachlan and Bland are two regional areas in New South Wales that differ sharply in their social and economic profiles. Lachlan has a much larger First Nations population at 18.3%, compared to 6.6% in Bland, and a far higher share of recent overseas arrivals (37.2% versus 16.2%). This is consistent with a wider gap in resources, as Bland is far higher in both access to money and overall advantage. Lachlan also sees much higher rates of recorded offences, including assault and motor vehicle theft, and has a far higher First Nations unemployment rate of 16.4% compared to 6.3% in Bland.
Daily life shares many commonalities, as both areas have similar proportions of people born overseas, similar levels of higher education, and nearly identical rates of long-term health conditions. However, some gaps are widening. Since 2011, the difference in the share of people renting has grown, with renting being well higher in Lachlan. At the same time, Bland has seen a rise in its share of people commuting by public transport compared to Lachlan.
