Tiwi vs Tiwi Islands - Wilderness

Tiwi Islands - Wilderness and Tiwi are two very different parts of the Northern Territory. Tiwi Islands - Wilderness is a vast area where 78% of people speak a First Nations language and the typical First Nations resident is very young at just 16. In contrast, Tiwi is more urban with 124 intersections per square kilometre and a typical First Nations resident who is far older at 30. There are also large gaps in income; the typical First Nations household in Tiwi earns $1,625, which is far higher than the $949 earned in Tiwi Islands - Wilderness.

These two areas have followed different paths since 2011, with the gap in typical First Nations personal income widening by $297. While Tiwi is more connected to public transport and health services, Tiwi Islands - Wilderness has a higher share of First Nations people who finished Year 12 at 42.9%. The unemployment rate for First Nations people is also well higher in Tiwi Islands - Wilderness, where it sits at 21.2% compared to 11.7% in Tiwi.
