Wanguri vs Tiwi Islands - Wilderness

Tiwi Islands - Wilderness and Wanguri are two very different parts of the Northern Territory. Tiwi Islands - Wilderness is a vast, sparsely populated area where First Nations residents are far younger, with a typical age of just 16. In contrast, the typical First Nations resident in Wanguri is far older at 27. There are also stark economic gaps; the usual First Nations personal income in Wanguri is $556, which is far higher than the $185 seen in Tiwi Islands - Wilderness. This aligns with a far higher unemployment rate in Tiwi Islands - Wilderness, which stands at 21.2% compared to 9.1% in Wanguri.

These two areas have tracked differently since 2011, particularly regarding their infrastructure and culture. Wanguri has far higher street connectivity and more public transport, while Tiwi Islands - Wilderness is far more focused on parks. However, Tiwi Islands - Wilderness has a much stronger connection to traditional language, with 78% of people speaking a First Nations language compared to 18.8% in Wanguri. Education levels also differ, with Year 12 completion well higher in Tiwi Islands - Wilderness at 42.9%.
