Mapoon vs New Mapoon

Mapoon and New Mapoon are two remote Queensland areas with similar populations of around 340 to 360 people. New Mapoon has a much higher rate of First Nations Year 12 completion at 50.9%, compared to 21.6% in Mapoon. First Nations languages are also far more common in New Mapoon, spoken by 77.4% of residents, which is 35 percentage points higher than the 42.6% seen in Mapoon. Mapoon has a well higher First Nations unemployment rate at 33.7%.

Both areas share a very young First Nations population, with a typical age of 24. This is well below the national figure. They are also alike in their lack of local services, as neither area has any homes within walking distance of schools, health services, or groceries. While New Mapoon is slightly more walkable than Mapoon, both are described as car-dependent.
