Mapoon vs Injinoo

Mapoon and Injinoo are two distinct First Nations communities in Queensland. Injinoo is larger, with 449 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people compared to 338 in Mapoon. There are significant differences in education and work; in Injinoo, 37.1% of First Nations people finished Year 12, which is far higher than the 21.6% in Mapoon. This gap is reflected in income, with typical First Nations household earnings in Injinoo being $1,300, well higher than the $911 in Mapoon. Unemployment for First Nations people is also far higher in Mapoon at 33.7%, while Injinoo is much lower at 12.3%.

Both areas share a total lack of easy access to essential services, as no homes in either place are within a 15-minute walk of groceries, health services, or a school. This common lack of infrastructure is seen in their walkability scores, which are both car-dependent. While Injinoo has a far higher share of people who speak a First Nations language (88.2% compared to 42.6% in Mapoon), both communities are shaped by this shared isolation from major urban hubs.
