Mapoon vs Napranum

Mapoon and Napranum are two remote Queensland areas with distinct profiles. Mapoon has a far higher share of people speaking a First Nations language at 42.6% and a far higher First Nations unemployment rate of 33.7%. In contrast, Napranum is far larger in terms of its First Nations population, with 716 people, and offers much better local access, with 92.9% of homes within a 15-minute walk of a school.

Both areas are largely car-dependent, with no homes within a 15-minute walk of groceries, health services, or public transport. This shared lack of local infrastructure is a constant for both places. While Napranum has a slightly higher share of First Nations Year 12 completions at 25.2%, both areas remain far below the national figure for school completion.
