Anindilyakwa (Groote) vs Yirrkala

Anindilyakwa (Groote) and Yirrkala are two remote Northern Territory areas with very different living standards. First Nations residents in Yirrkala have a far higher typical household income of $1,458 compared to $856 in Anindilyakwa (Groote). This contrast is reflected in education and employment, with Yirrkala seeing far higher Year 12 completion rates (38.9% versus 16.0%) and far lower First Nations unemployment. Yirrkala is also much more accessible, with 88.9% of homes within a 15-minute walk of health services, compared to just 19.8% in Anindilyakwa (Groote).

These gaps in access and income have widened over time. Both areas remain deeply connected to culture, with about 96% of people speaking a First Nations language. They are also similarly reliant on vehicles, as both are described as mostly car-dependent. While Anindilyakwa (Groote) has a far larger First Nations population, both areas share a similar landscape with nearly identical average terrain slopes.
