Barker Hindmarsh
Hindmarsh and Barker are both populous areas in South Australia, but they offer very different lifestyles. Hindmarsh is a very walkable urban area where 92.4% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of a variety of amenities; Barker is mostly car-dependent and far more rural, with a 100-minute typical drive to the city. There are also sharp social contrasts: Hindmarsh is far more multicultural, with 23.2% of people using another language at home compared to just 5.8% in Barker. Education and income are also higher in Hindmarsh, where 23.8% of adults hold a bachelor degree or higher, while 11.0% do in Barker.
Since 2011, the two areas have drifted further apart in some ways while converging in others. The gap in language diversity has widened, and the difference in typical weekly family income has grown to $427. However, the divide in housing is shrinking, as the gap in the share of separate houses has narrowed to 21.3%. Despite these shifts, they remain alike in several basics; both have about the same share of people needing help with daily activities (around 7%) and the same typical number of people per home at 2.3.
