How people contribute — volunteering, unpaid care and domestic work, and defence service.
Nearly a quarter of people in Alexandra volunteer, making it a place where residents are far more likely to give their time than those in most other areas. This high level of community spirit stands out, even though the number of volunteers has fallen since 2011. Other forms of unpaid work and service are more typical for the region.

About 23% of residents volunteer, which is well above the Victorian figure of 13.3% and the national figure of 14.1%. This is much higher than most similar areas, although the rate fell by 6.2 percentage points since 2011.
