First Nations in Docklands

How many people identify as First Nations, and the typical age.

The typical First Nations resident is 30, which is noticeably older than the same group in Victoria and Australia, where the usual age is 24.

Education

School completion among First Nations people.

Schooling levels are very high, with 65.3% of First Nations people finishing Year 12. This is far above the Victorian figure of 42.4% and the national average of 37.0%.

Work

Engagement with the labour force.

About 9.5% of First Nations residents are unemployed, which is around the middle for similar areas and about the same as the state figure.

Income

Personal and household incomes.

Personal incomes are among the highest for this group, with a typical individual earning $1,149, far above the $540 national figure. Household incomes are also a little above the state and national averages at $1,875.

Language & culture

Use of an Australian Indigenous language at home.

Cultural connection is strong, as 22.0% of First Nations residents speak a First Nations language. This is far above the 5.2% seen across Victoria and well above the national figure of 12.3%.
