Margaret River Capel
Margaret River and Capel are two Western Australian towns with very different social profiles. Margaret River is a highly mobile area where 46.1% of people moved in the last five years, and it has a much more qualified population, with 23.2% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher compared to 9.9% in Capel. Margaret River also has a far higher share of people born overseas (25.2% versus 13.6%) and those using another language at home. In contrast, Capel has a noticeably older population, with 19.4% aged 65 and over compared to 13.3% in Margaret River, and a higher share of residents with long-term health conditions (34.1% versus 21.8%).
Since 2011, the two areas have drifted further apart in several key ways. The gap in educational attainment and the proportion of overseas-born residents have both widened, while the difference in age has also increased. Despite these shifts, the two towns remain similar in other respects; both are considered somewhat walkable and have nearly identical rates of unemployment (about 3%) and typical household sizes.
