Roma Taroom
Roma and Taroom (L) are two Queensland towns with very different profiles. Roma is much larger and younger, with a typical resident aged 35 and a higher share of children under 15 (21.6%). It has a more qualified workforce and higher incomes, with the typical personal weekly income being $951. In contrast, Taroom (L) is an older community where 25.3% of people are aged 65 or over, and the typical weekly personal income is $652. Taroom (L) also has much better walkability; for example, 95.7% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of a school, compared to 48.7% in Roma.
Since 2011, the two towns have tracked in different directions across several measures. The gap in typical age has narrowed, but the difference in education and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations has widened. Despite these shifts, they remain alike in some ways. Both areas have very similar unemployment rates, around 3%, and nearly the same number of people per home. They also share similar patterns in unpaid care and the small number of residents who use public transport to get to work.
