Black Morphett
Black and Morphett are neighbouring South Australian areas with very different housing and layouts. Black is dominated by separate houses, with 90.8% of homes being detached and 89.8% having three or more bedrooms. In contrast, Morphett is more varied, with only 50.2% of homes being separate houses. This difference extends to the local feel; Morphett is very walkable, while Black is only somewhat walkable. Morphett also has a much higher share of renters (33.8% compared to 15.6% in Black) and many more recent overseas arrivals, at 19.8% compared to 7.8% in Black.
Everyday life in both places shares many similarities, with nearly identical typical weekly personal incomes of around $840. They also have similar rates of volunteers and people who have served in the Defence Force. While they are alike in these ways, the gap in living arrangements has grown; the share of people living alone is now far higher in Morphett (35.8%) than in Black (20.1%). This gap has widened significantly since 2011, as has the difference in how many people have moved into each area over the last five years.
