Port Stephens The Entrance
Port Stephens and The Entrance are two New South Wales areas with similar population sizes, but they differ greatly in layout and age. Residents in The Entrance have much better access to daily needs, with far more homes within a 15-minute walk of schools, health services, and parks. The Entrance also has far more public transport departures and higher street connectivity. In contrast, Port Stephens is an older area where the typical resident is 48, compared to 42 in The Entrance. Port Stephens also has a much higher share of people who owned their homes outright (41.6% versus 32.4%) and a higher proportion of former Defence Force members.
Everyday life in both places is similar in many ways, with almost identical rates of people living alone, those in de facto relationships, and those who speak only English. Both areas also have about the same number of school enrolments and similar unemployment rates. Over time, the gaps between them have often narrowed. For example, the difference in typical age has fallen from 12 years in 2011 to 6 years today, and the gap in Year 12 completion has also shrunk.
