Lake Macquarie Maitland
Maitland and Lake Macquarie are two large, nearby areas in New South Wales with very different age profiles. Maitland is a younger place, with a typical resident aged 36 and a much higher share of children under 15 (21.4%). This is consistent with the area having far more school enrolments (18,665) and more people providing unpaid childcare. Lake Macquarie is much older, with a typical resident aged 44 and a significantly higher share of seniors aged 65 and over (24.1%). Maitland also offers much better walkability, with far more homes within a 15-minute walk of schools (72.7% vs 53.8%) and health services (42.4% vs 27.3%).
The gap in the number of seniors has widened since 2011, as Lake Macquarie has become noticeably older than Maitland. Despite this, the two areas remain very similar in other ways. They have the same typical weekly rent of $370 and a nearly identical share of detached houses. Both areas also have about the same proportion of one-parent families and people who have served in the Defence Force.
