Auburn East Hills
Auburn and East Hills are two nearby areas in New South Wales with very different housing and population profiles. Auburn is a hub for new arrivals, with 58.9% of people born overseas and 70.7% using a language other than English at home. This is far higher than in East Hills, where 34.3% were born overseas and 44.4% use another language. Their homes differ sharply too; East Hills has far more separate houses (69.9%) and large three-plus bedroom homes (83.5%), while Auburn is dominated by flats and apartments, with 48.8% of households renting.
Since 2011, the gaps between these two areas have often widened, particularly in how people live and work. The difference in renting and home ownership has grown, as has the gap in recent overseas arrivals. Despite this, they share some common ground. Both have very similar typical weekly incomes, around $688 in Auburn and $733 in East Hills. They are also effectively alike in their accessibility, with almost every home in both areas being within a 10-minute walk of public transport.
