Somerset West Coast
West Coast (Tas.) and Somerset are two Tasmanian areas with similar population sizes but very different landscapes. West Coast (Tas.) is a vast, rainy region where the typical monthly home-loan payment is among the lowest at $650, compared to $1,192 in Somerset. The two areas also differ in their education and transport setups; West Coast (Tas.) has far more schools per 1,000 children, while Somerset has far higher numbers of public transport stops and departures per 1,000 people.
Since 2011, several gaps between the two have widened. The difference in typical mortgage payments has grown, and West Coast (Tas.) now has a much higher share of people living alone. However, they share many common traits, such as having roughly the same percentage of First Nations residents (around 8%) and very similar typical weekly family incomes of about $1,400. Both areas also have a higher share of residents aged 65 and over than the national figure.
