Port Pirie Kadina
Port Pirie and Kadina are two South Australian regional centres with very different layouts. Port Pirie is more urban, with far higher street connectivity and much better access to public transport; 83.7% of its homes are within a 10-minute walk of a stop. It also has a larger Indigenous population (721 people) and more people who speak a First Nations language. Kadina has a higher level of general advantage and more people who own their homes outright (40.6% compared to 32.3% in Port Pirie), though it is much more car-dependent with far fewer public transport options.
Since 2011, the two areas have drifted further apart in some ways while remaining similar in others. The gap in typical weekly rents has widened to $65, and the difference in the number of people living alone has grown. However, the two places are remarkably alike in their typical weekly personal incomes, the share of children under 15, and the proportion of adults with a bachelor degree. Both areas also sit well above the national figure for the share of people who identify as having no religion.
