Light Clare
Clare and Light are two South Australian areas with very different layouts. Clare is more concentrated, with a far higher share of homes within a 15-minute walk of groceries (59.1% vs 27.7%) and health services (56.6% vs 24.0%). It is also an older area; the typical resident is 45, compared to 40 in Light, and it has a much higher share of people aged 65 and over (24.9% vs 17.8%). In contrast, Light has much better public transport access, with far more PT stops and departures per 1,000 people, and a much lower drive time to the city (48 minutes compared to 99 minutes in Clare).
Everyday life is similar in both places, with nearly identical typical weekly personal incomes and similar shares of people who have completed Year 12. They also have very similar proportions of First Nations residents and one-parent families. However, some gaps are widening; for example, the difference in the number of recent overseas arrivals has grown, with 13.1% in Clare compared to just 3.0% in Light.
