Cape York Tablelands
Cape York and Tablelands are two distinct Queensland areas with contrasting social landscapes. Cape York has a much larger First Nations population (47.1%) and more people who speak a First Nations language (41.9%). It is also a younger area, with a typical resident aged 35, compared to 43 in Tablelands. Housing differs sharply; 51.9% of Cape York households rent, while 44.6% of homes in Tablelands are owned outright. This is consistent with Cape York having far more people in de facto relationships and more one-parent families.
Everyday life in both places shares several similarities, including a similar share of adults with bachelor degrees (around 9%) and roughly the same proportion of people volunteering. Both areas also face a total lack of public transport stops and have very similar average temperatures. While these two places are quite different, many of the gaps have been narrowing since 2011, including the difference in the number of people who use another language at home and the share of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents.
