Outback and Far West are both sparsely populated areas, though they differ in their community makeup and services. Far West has a much larger First Nations population at 29.0% compared to 15.9% in Outback. However, Outback has a far higher share of people who speak a First Nations language (30.7% versus 2.6%) and a higher rate of Year 12 completion (38.9% versus 26.8%). Outback also has more people living alone, at 46.9%, while Far West has more one-parent families at 24.7%.
Since 2011, several gaps between the two have shifted, such as the difference in Year 12 completion and the share of people living alone, both of which have widened. At the same time, the gap in the First Nations population has narrowed. Despite these shifts, the two areas remain very similar in some ways; they share the same typical resident age of 43 and have nearly identical rates of full-time employment and long-term health conditions.
