Fraser Coast Somerset
Fraser Coast and Somerset are both regional areas in Queensland, but they differ in their demographics and layout. Fraser Coast has a noticeably older population, with a typical resident aged 51 compared to 45 in Somerset. This age gap is reflected in health and housing, as Fraser Coast has a well higher share of people aged 65 and over (30.2% versus 21.5%) and more people with long-term health conditions. While Fraser Coast is more walkable for essentials—with 39.4% of homes within 15 minutes of groceries compared to 23.7% in Somerset—it has far fewer public transport options and a much higher drug offence rate.
Both areas are very similar in their levels of higher education, with about 11% of adults holding a bachelor degree or higher. They also share similar proportions of people who speak little or no English and those with no religion. Over time, some gaps have widened; for example, residents in Fraser Coast are now noticeably older than those in Somerset, and a higher share of Fraser Coast homes are owned outright. Since 2011, the difference in the number of children under 15 has also grown, with Somerset remaining well higher than Fraser Coast.
