Mid-Coast Newcastle
Newcastle and Mid-Coast are two distinct New South Wales regions with very different demographics. Newcastle is a younger, more affluent hub where the typical resident is 37, and 28.3% of adults hold a bachelor degree or higher. In contrast, Mid-Coast is far older, with a typical age of 54 and 33.2% of people aged 65 and over. This age gap is reflected in the housing and workforce, with Newcastle seeing far higher rates of renting (36.6%) and people working or looking for work (63.9%), while Mid-Coast has a much higher share of homes owned outright (48.1%).
Both areas sit close to the national figure for the share of residents who have served in the Defence Force. Aside from that, the gap between these two places has generally widened since 2016. The difference in typical weekly household income has grown to $700, and the age gap between them has increased from 15 to 17 years. While they share similar terrain and average temperatures, Newcastle remains much more connected with far more public transport departures and a higher proportion of people working from home.
