Lane Cove Northern Beaches
Northern Beaches and Lane Cove are both high-income areas in Sydney, but they differ in their layout and demographics. Lane Cove has a much higher proportion of university graduates (56.7% compared to 37.7% in Northern Beaches) and people who speak a language other than English at home (28.3% versus 15.6%). The two areas also look different; separate houses are far more common in Northern Beaches, where 57.3% of homes are detached, while Lane Cove is dominated by flats and apartments. This is consistent with Northern Beaches having a longer typical drive time to the city (24 minutes) compared to Lane Cove (13 minutes).
Both areas are almost identical when it comes to the share of children under 15, with each sitting at around 18%. They also share similar patterns in unpaid care and home loan payments. While they have much in common, some gaps are widening; Lane Cove has seen a far higher increase in people working from home and a growing lead in typical weekly incomes, which are now $315 higher than in Northern Beaches.
